Cookie Monster’s New Book Sounds Oddly Charming

It’s been over a year since Apple aired a pretty charming ad starring Cookie Monster, America’s foremost azure puppet-creature.

Set to the tune of Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle,” the commercial shows Cookie Monster slogging through the interminable (uh, 14-minute) process of waiting for his cookies to finish baking. He grows increasingly impatient in the process, ingesting a wooden spatula in protest, badgering poor Siri about how much time remains until he can take his cookies out of the oven.

The commercial has apparently inspired the Sesame Workshop to create a book in Cookie Monster’s name. This past Tuesday, the Sesame Workshop and Macmillan’s Children’s imprint revealed the cover of a The Joy of Cookies: Cookie Monster’s Guide to Life. Set to hit shelves in April of 2018, it’s fashioned after a self-help book, offering 160 pages of sage advice in the form of soothing platitudes: make cookies, not war; love is meaning [sic] of life, love cookies is purpose [sic] of life. (Think of it as a book in which our very own cooking manifesto—eat thoughtfully, live joyfully—is transposed to the act of cookie-making.) The folks over at Entertainment Weekly got their hands on the book’s cover, as well as a look at its first few pages.

Sounds like a lovely book, though there’s no indication that it’ll have any recipes like his decades-old cookie dough recipe, cribbed from 1975’s Big Bird’s Busy Book. No matter; The Joy of Cookies sounds like a real trip. Cookie Monster visited the Food52 offices in December 2015, but that was well before my time. It’s too bad I couldn’t meet him and soak up his wisdom. Guess I’ll just have to settle for the book!
