Confession: I haven’t had a kitchen table since 2014. First, because I thought a couch was a better post-college investment. And later, because I only had room in my postage-stamp-sized apartment for that couch.

My roommate and I make it work—she loves cheese, cured meats, and crackers, and I’ve become a master plate balancer. But even after three years of practice, maneuvering knives, forks, and spoons can throw a wrench in our flow. It’s a challenge to balance a plate on your lap as you slice salmon or fork a fried egg. Meals sans utensils mean we can focus on what’s important: eating.
